BOSL Showcase: Deadly Angel Designs

Ever since I started my job as blog intern for BOSL, I have been absolutely thrilled for two reasons: The first is getting to talk about and introduce people to some of my favorite things in SL. The second is that I get to introduce everyone to up and coming designers that I believe will leave a big mark on SL.

Today’s interview is also doubly special because I get to showcase not only a phenomenally talented interior and furniture designer in SL, but also my sister Angelista Janick, who owns and creates everything in her store, Deadly Angel Designs. (Just so you know, as much as I love her, if her designs didn’t merit BOSL attention, I wouldn’t blog about it.)

If you have never heard of this store, I encourage you to visit as soon as possible. Her furniture is incredible, and you can tell that she puts a tremendous amount of heart into everything that she does. Now, because she is my sister , I already know just how special she is as a person. I decided to conduct an interview with her so that you all can have a chance to get to know her as well. Take a look at our conversation…and then scroll through the photos of some of her merchandise. I would not be surprised if you hopped on the LM right away to go and take a look for yourself.

Occasus: “First of all, thank you so much for taking some time to share with our readers a little bit about yourself and what you do in Second Life.”

Angelista: “You are very welcome.”

Occasus: “When did Deadly Angel Designs [DAD] open?”

Angelista: “Hmmmm… The store opened the first part of September.”

Occasus: “How long have you been designing and building furniture?”

Angelista: “Ever since i started SL I have been changing already built things. Eventually after i had been in SL for about 6 months I started building my own things. I started with childrens furniture, then wedding builds, and finally i opened DAD.”

Occasus: “Creators and designers in SL are some of the most creative people I’ve ever met….what is it that inspires you when you are creating and building the furniture?

Angelista: “Sometimes it will be a texture. There are times i just drop a prim and start changing the shape of it and decide it looks like something. Most of my inspiration comes from my friends, though. Sometimes they tell me things they want or need, something specific for their house, and then i build that for them.”

Occasus: “Most of the readers won’t realize that a few months ago you actually built the house that I’m living in now. I used to go through a new house a month…but I’ve never gotten tired of the one that you built me….If there’s one thing that sometimes is missing from SL builders, it’s heart…and you show a lot of it when you build.”

Angelista: “I always have someone i love in mind when i build.”

Occasus: “And it definitely shows in your designs.”

Angelista Janick blushes. “Thanks.”

Occasus: “What do you want our readers to know about your style of design? Is there something for everyone at Deadly Angel Designs?”

Angelista: “My store is small. There is something for everyone here, but if there isnt, I’m always open to ideas. A few weeks ago a woman came into the shop, and I was working on a throne but couldnt get it to come together quite right. We talked, and she made a few suggestions. From her suggestions I created and named the throne after her. It’s for sale at my satellite location. It’s called the silvermoon throne. I build to please people, to express myself, and, most of all, have fun. For all of my builds I am willing to customize colors to suit a house or room theme. Satisfaction is very important to me.”

Occasus: “I think that’s really great…being open to new ideas and approachable about them is also something that tends to go missing in Second Life. It’s really neat to see someone so friendly and approachable.”

Angelista: “Two of my favorite creators in SL are very much like that. They both are approachable and are helpful, too. I know how it makes me feel to be able to IM them and ask questions or express a concern. I based my business and my customer service on the way they run their stores. I like a feeling of family.”

Occasus: “You mentioned that you used to build children’s furniture and wedding sets. Do you ever foresee DAD expanding into different types of design, or are living room furniture and bedroom sets something you believe you’ll stick to?”

Angelista: “I think eventually I would like to build a few houses, and maybe put some of my older builds up for sale. My inventory is full of crazy designs that i havent done anything with.”

Occasus: “That’s exciting! I know from experience, having had you build my own home, that if you start selling houses, it won’t take long for people to turn to you for both house and interior design needs.”

Occasus: “I’ve spent a lot of time looking around your store, and it feels very homey and warm. I can tell that you definitely love what you do. Is there anything else you’d like to tell our readers before we wrap up our interview?”

Angelista: “I would like to thank you for taking time to talk to me and for coming into the store. Most importantly I want to tell you how much your support has always meant to me. I would also like to let the readers know that if they ever have any questions or comments or fun things they would like to share with the DAD’s family, to please never hesitate to contact me. My email address is located in my profile. Thank you again.”

Discovering Donna Flora

It’s funny how seemingly random events can lead you into something completely unexpected and delightful. A modeling agency I work with recently asked me to script an upcoming fashion show which would feature the latest design releases from Donna Flora. Before that job I had never been to the store, nor was I aware of the brand, so I decided to check it out.

What a feast for the eyes! Squinternet Larnia’s designs are stunning conceptually, but what really floored me was the quality. I shop for clothes here in SL with two criteria: One, that they be fashionable and something I enjoy wearing; and two, that they be good quality designs. I work hard for my lindens, and I don’t want to buy something, only to be so disappointed by the quality of the work that I never wear it.

Donna Flora clothes are so gorgeous that I went on a shopping spree…and then decided to make this post on three of my favorite designs that I found.

http://slurl.com/secondlife/Garman/205/99/102

Karen Pants Outfit (Donna Flora)

The first outfit is Donna Flora’s “Karen Pants.” This outfit can be bought in both skirt and pant versions (I chose the pants). The high-waisted pants are accented by four black buttons and look fantastic. If you look closely at the picture, you can see the detail in both the jacket and the ruffles of the shirt. The first time I put the outfit on, I found myself camming around myself and staring, just being completely vain. I couldn’t get enough of myself…hehe. The outfit is completed with a beautiful and delicate lace scarf. To complete the ensemble, I’m wearing Stiletto Moody “Black Patent” shoes and “127 in Silver” earrings by Kraftika, “Single Lady” hair from Exile and Laqroki’s “Carina Skin Peach Glow #2.”

Nicoletta Mini (Donna Flora)

This next Donna Flora design is called “Nicoletta Mini.” I love this one – it’s a cozy winter outfit, but with attitude. The colors are so soft that they would suit anyone. But once again, what floored me the most was the dedication to detail in the knit sweater top. It’s flawless. I also love the plum-colored mini/sweater bottom that drapes nicely over the short leather-style shorts. It’s both fun and flirty…two adjectives that I use a lot when i dig though my inventory trying to find the perfect outfit to wear.

Paired with this outfit are an amazing pair of boots that my SL partner actually found for me….I squealed with delight when I saw what fantastic taste he had. These “Venice Worn Brown” boots are from Kitties Lair, and they are of extremely high quality without breaking your SL budget. I wear these with many outfits, as they are so versatile. Finishing off the look is Laqroki “Carina Skin Number 6″ and Exile’s “Kaori” hair. This short spiky hairdo is one of the reasons that Exile has recently become one of my favorite places to shop for hair. As someone with a serious hair fetish, I find their hair to be not only affordable, but very realistic and high quality.

RINA outfit (Donna Flora)

This final outfit is my favorite of all: “Rina” from Donna Flora. If you are dreading going outside this winter, put on this cozy but sophisticated suit from Donna Flora, and you’ll never fear the cold outdoors again. This ensemble comes in three clothing options. Wear it as a full dress, or pants suit…or, if you’re feeling extra flirty, suit up in the mini dress version. Take a close look at the detailed knit of this dress/pant suit and the scarf like belt that cinches the waist, and you’ll know that this is a one of a kind outfit that MUST be added to your own personal wardrobe. From the inviting earthtones of the dress to the high turtle neck collar, this design invokes “sophisticated woman” with every step you take. Ward away the chills with the gorgeous knitted hood that includes hair in three shades, and you are ready for a snuggly day with that special someone. Since this outfit comes with nearly everything a woman needs for a complete ensemble, I just needed to add a good pair of shoes – “Chi Chi Pumps” in Brown Velvet by Maitreya.

I encourage you to visit the Donna Flora store for yourself…it truly does not disappoint.

Love and Sunshine,

Occasus

One of my favorite features of Candour Skins is the Limited Edition skin line. Offering beautiful and exotic looks, you can increase your individuality by being one of the select few to own these skins.

Mannon is a lovely person – warm and friendly and talented. She has been building and creating things in SL for a good three years. Hailing from a small town near Rotterdam in The Netherlands, Mannon’s English is a second language, so her dear friend Toapz is the main spokesperson and contact for Candour Skins. In fact, it was Toapz who convinced Mannon to apply her talent to creating beautiful skins for Second Life women.

And we’re very glad she did.

RFL Hope Hunt & Race begins Sept 27

PRESS RELEASE Sunday, 20 September, 2009
===== for immediate release =====

Spreading the Hope – RFL Hope Hunt + Race begins Sunday, September 27

Starting Sunday, September 27, the Relay for Life of Second Life Hope Hunt + Race will be taking place throughout Second Life. The Hunt will last for three weeks from 10am SLT on Sunday, September 27 through Saturday, October 10. All proceeds go to Relay for Life, the American Cancer Society’s signature activity.

This is a treasure hunt in Second Life. It was conceived by the ‘All-Stars’ Relay for Life team who originally organized a hunt in June, but had to close down the hunt due to technical issues. They have now resolved the issues and are looking forward to a successful event!

So how does it work? Over 200 participating merchants will hide pink Hope roses at their locations. Like most hunts, many of the merchants will be putting give-away items – ‘swag’ – in the roses. There will also be 100 roses on the American Cancer Society sim. Unlike many hunts, merchants can place as many roses as they choose at their location – there is no limit. The rose represents hope for a cure, and the organizers chose pink for this event because October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

This is also a ‘race’. Cash prizes have been donated and will be awarded to the winners at the conclusion of the event, as follows: first prize: L$45,000; second prize: L$25,000; and third prize: L$10,000. The prize money has been donated anonymously, in honor of a loved one who lost the battle to cancer.

To take part, hunters click on a sign to receive a free Hud, which they can wear, which will track the number of roses they find. The signs are set out at participating merchants and there is no entry fee. The leaderboard will be displayed on the Hope Hunt website: http://thehopehunt.blogspot.com/ and will be automatically updated every three hours.

The merchants will purchase the roses they place at their location(s). All proceeds from the sale of roses go directly to Relay for Life. There will also be a website that provides merchants with ‘traffic reports’, showing the number of avatars who have found roses at each of their locations.

Says Sidda Jubilee of the All-Stars team: ‘Each and every one of us at one time or another has been touched by cancer. It has destroyed so many lives and Relay for Life enables our avatars to participate in defeating this enemy. We want to stamp cancer out of our lives now and forever. With hunts being so popular in Second Life, there is no better way to spread cancer awareness across the grid; it will also spread this awareness to each and every avatar’s real life as well.’ She continued: ‘Special thanks are due to Arete Diplomat whose wonderful scripting made it work.’

Tayzia Abattoir, Relay for Life of Second Life Event Chair for 2009-2010 says: ‘I am excited to have it utilizing the American Cancer Society sim so more people can see the services we have here :) It is a wonderful idea, and the way it was thought out and put together took a lot of work and dedication. Kudos to everyone involved with such a creative fun event to raise funds for the ACS!’ She added, ‘I plan to look for some roses when I find time to quit working LOL!’

Happy hunting! And if you would like to volunteer for Relay for Life 2010 please join the ‘SL’s RFL Volunteers’ group and look out for the announcements.

BOSL-Sponsored Auction Raises Over L$1,000,000 for RFL!

THE “DIVAS ONE OF A KIND AUCTION” TO BENEFIT RFL
========================================

On June 20th some of the best designers in Second Life walked the runway themselves to auction one-of-a kind designs to benefit the American Cancer Society’s RELAY FOR LIFE.  Sponsored by the Best of SL, this amazing event raised over L$1,000,000 for RFL.

Held at the stunning Patch Thibaud Auditorium, a crowd of 160 attendees…no, that’s not a misprint…enjoyed the stunning designs and the lively auction. Best of Second Life (BOSL) CEO Frolic Mills kicked off the event by teasing the designers about their ability (or the lack thereof) to walk a runway. It was all in good fun, and the designers and models enjoyed the event as much as the audience. DJ Kromus Korobase donated his services and added to the entertainment as the audio announcer, while Auctioneers CheerCoach4EjS Gymnast, Jens Marksman,  and Wenadrenia Soderstrom, who also devoted many hours helping organize and support the effort, kept the bidding flowing.

Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society’s signature activity. It offers everyone an opportunity to participate in the fight against cancer. SL has taken up the cause in any number of ways, and this auction provided a great chance for attendees and designers to contribute to this worthwhile cause. Between the auction proceeds and additional donations from individuals at the event, the Divas One of a Kind Auction raised an unprecedented total of over L$1,000,000 (equivalent of over $4,000 USD).

Chairman of the Board of SL Relay For Life, Fayandria Foley told Frolic Mills, “It was perfect. A splash of society with fun and class!”
