‘Relay For Life 2010’-Hope, love and a whole lot of fun

There can’t be many of us in second life who haven’t experienced the very real life specter of cancer.  Whether it’s been a personal battle, supporting a friend or co worker through intensive treatment or watching a loved one succumb to the disease, each of us has our own story to tell. Cancer is the great leveler -showing no regard for age, race or social background and last year, in the USA alone, there were 1,479,350 new cases diagnosed,  with cancer accounting for one in four deaths. Massive and humbling statistics. In an effort to fight cancer and to help financially and emotionally support the victims of this most cruel of diseases, ‘The American Cancer Society’ hold annual ‘Relay for Life’ events across the country and millions of people give their time and money to help raise funds.

Since starting in 1985, when surgeon Dr. Gordy Klatt decided to run continuously for twenty four hours to raise funds for cancer research, International ‘Relay For Life’ has been embraced by people across the globe, with events held in 20 countries outside of the United States and in Second Life, the community gathers together each year to help the cause too. In fact, ‘Relay For Life’ events have found strong supporter networks in SL, with hundreds of residents donating their time, talent, skills and experience to help fundraise. In 2008, ‘Relay For Life of Second Life’ raised $215,000 – surpassing its total for the previous three years combined, and now in its 6th year, it’s hoped that this figure will be exceeded with a goal target of $300,000. With 93 teams taking part in the actual relays this year, it looks set to be a record breaking year.

This year’s key theme is ‘Wishing On A Cure’ and to kick start the four month long fundraising season off in style, the glamorous surroundings of the Patch Thibaud Auditorium played host to a glittering opening ceremony. Addressing the large audience, RFL Event Chair, Tayzia Abattoir, welcomed us all with an impassioned   speech that had many in the crowd in tears. “Everyone has personal reasons why they Relay.” She told us. “Whether they have been directly touched by cancer, indirectly touched, or just know what a horrible disease it is and pray that people do not have to face it and want to help in any way they can. We are all one family here. We fight the same battle.”Following Tayzia, other members from the 60 strong in world RFL committee explained how all the proceeds from 2010’s RFL will be used to benefit the millions of people and their families affected by cancer each year. All speakers received rapturous applause from crowd, proving that the residents of SL are some of the most caring citizens on earth.

Cancer may be a very serious issue, but the RFL team and all its supporters in world are determined that hope, love and a whole lot of fun, are the biggest weapons in the war against cancer. Over the next few months, thousands of events and attractions will take place in SL to help highlight the cause and everyone at the opening ceremony was certainly in the mood to party! Following a standing ovation from the crowd for venue owner and BOSL CEO Frolic Mills, singer ScarlettLa Roux took to the stage, officially launching proceedings with a superb rendition of a Melissa Etheridge song called ‘I Run For Life’. The combination of heartfelt lyrics and ScarlettLa’s blues infused, sweet voice struck a chord with the audience.

After her thirty minute set, which was well received by the audience, next to take place under the spotlights was singer Damian Carbenell, while glamorous dancers from Dazzlers Inc accompanied him with a delightful routine. Then, to shouts and wild applause from the excited crowd, SL’s premier rock singer, Mankind Tracer, strode onto the stage bringing the audience to fever pitch with his usual mix of original songs, charisma and undeniable vocal talent. Mankind explained why, despite his busy schedule, he is so committed to lending his talents for this cause.

“The events that RFL put on are always fun, bringing in a lot of people who share a common cause.” He confirmed “And year after year, Relay For Life have shown themselves to be consistent in putting on benefits to raise much needed money. People know they can trust that the money raised will be handled properly by the good people running the events.”

The unity and camaraderie of everyone involved in the opening party was evident to see and donations flowed in from people reaching into their virtual wallets to donate to the cause. With a tribute to the work of RL fashion designer Alexander McQueen following the initial ceremony featuring unique couture made especially for this event, RFL  2010 has got off to the best possible start.

‘An Elegant Affair’–BOSL’s tribute to Coco Chanel

In the pantheon of fashion gods, one name rules above all others. A woman who was a pioneer, a rebel–a woman of unswerving self-belief; lover of many, truly known by few. The name is Mademoiselle Coco Chanel. Controversial throughout her life, Chanel created elegant yet simple clothes; garments that shocked and astounded in equal measure. A true innovator, her name still resonates, continually inspiring fashion designers in both real and virtual worlds to strive for excellence.

Coco Chanel 1

Paying tribute to Coco and her enduring legacy, twenty of SL’s most prestigious fashion houses were invited to design key pieces that would simultaneously define their own style and echo that of the great designer herself. Once again, the luxuriant setting of the Patch Thibaud Auditorium was the setting for this, the Grand finale to the ‘Best of Second Life Magazine’ fashion week. With its beautiful art deco furnishings, you could almost sense the ghost of Chanel herself-watching with approval from one of the balconies as the show began.

Coco Chanel 17

As the red velvet curtains drew back, a spectacular stage was revealed based on a Chanel shop front with stunning models from the Boulevard Agency, silhouetted against a Parisian sky. There were gasps from the huge assembled audience. The magnificence of the stage left us all spellbound as Cheri Parker, our welcoming host for the event, introduced the models. The evening’s entertainment, singer Elvera Lerner, serenaded us with her melodious voice, singing a selection of show tunes and Cole Porter classics, thus providing the perfect soundtrack to the supremely glamorous atmosphere.

Coco Chanel 16

The real stars of the show were the clothes themselves and the designers exceeded all expectations. Variations of Chanel classics such as the little black dress were given futuristic flourishes such as swirling fur trim and layers of opalescent tulle.  Chanel’s trademark pearls were encrusted over tight bodices. Her other signature design statement, tweed, was given a contemporary twist and featured on cropped jackets and headwear. Naturally, an emphasis on traditional Chanel colors of dynamic white and black featured heavily throughout, but each designer managed to make the creations their very own, imbuing the clothes with the essence of Chanel yet creating their own unique styles. Enhancing the clothes even further, footwear was provided by the incomparable Stiletto Moody, the perfect shoes to wear with any Chanel-inspired creation.

Coco Chanel 7

Even when the hour-long catwalk show was over, the excitement did not end, as the CEO of BOSL, Frolic Mills took to the stage, accompanied by all the participating models. Standing on top of a glistening white carousel, Mr. Mills announced to the thrilled audience, which included a huge selection luminaries from the SL fashion scene such as Raven Pennyfeather, Applonia Criss, Jarl Soderstrom and Mimi Juneau, that one lucky audience member would receive the entire collection. After calling out a selection of Chanel related questions in local chat, it was declared that the winner of this glittering prize was Nino Heartsdale who told me that she was “overwhelmed, stunned and completely delighted at winning these exquisite clothes”.  This show was undeniably a resounding triumph for all those involved and a fitting homage to Coco Chanel–a woman whose designs shaped the way we all dress today.

Dazzling Lady Thera

QUOTE:

Thera Taurog: Did you notice? People always look to be better on SL. The result is SL provides a better life to all of us:))

Thera is a warm and richly human person to chat to and it was my pleasure to catch up with her before her successful show today.

“You know the best sensation for me  doesn’t have to do with lindens.  I just love everytime I see a beautiful SL woman wearing something I did:))), that’s what drives me to make more.”

For those of you who missed today’s show, keep watching for the pics. It was without doubt the most creatively lovely fashion show I have seen this year. Congrats to Frolic and Nino who were responsible for all that wonderful visual stimulation.

And Lady Thera? Well she’s rather busy these days – happily so.

“I’ve decided to do only one [new design] per month because I got married a second time… And we wanted to enjoy other things on SL.”

Every happiness Thera from all of us at BOSL.

DESIGNER DUO IGNITES BOSL FASHION WEEK 2009 WITH THEIR BLAZING FALL COLLECTIONS

This show titled Cirque du Soleil (Circus of the Sun in English), was a sparkling extravaganza of sight and sound featuring two of Second Life’s most renowned designers:  Nonna Hedges (Details) and Mami Jewell (Azul).

What better venue to showcase these incredibly beautiful designs than the Patch Thibaud Auditorium, which was wonderfully transformed into an imaginative fantasy setting befitting the distinctive works of Nonna and Mami.

Well, remember I mentioned this show was an extravaganza of  sight and sound?  As a special surprise, we were treated to live music throughout the show provided by a talented Performer named Melodyblue Melody.  Ms. Melody is a First Life performer who has performed in many venues large and small.  Although relatively new to Second Life, it is clear she has a bright future here as she sings like an angel.  Her repertoire includes:  jazz, blues, R&B, and a little rock & roll.

Boulevard Agency provided the models for Cirque du Soleil.  Kay Fairey produced the show and the lovely models were;  Mimmi Boa, Summer Deadlight, Gemini Hennesy, Kyrinnia Desmoulins, Alexia Speizer, and Wenadrenia Soderstrom.

Thanks to Nonna Hedges and Mami Jewell for sharing their talents with us.  There are two more absolutely fantabulous days left of the BOSL Fashion Week 2009, you don’t want to miss a single minute…see you all there!

KWZ Brings Fashion Week Attendees to Victorian and Gothic Worlds

Held at the Patch Thibaud Auditorium, the KWZ show transported the audience into the world of Victorian, gothic, and modern haute couture…I’m not kidding…this was an incredibly innovative and creative show featuring designs for men, women, and even some childrens items, with a vast amount of attention to detail. The Cake dresses put us in mind of Marie Antoinette’s famous quote “let them eat cake”, but no calories of course.

Some of the men’s outfits were so incredibly romantic, they made me feel like swooning.

The set featured a long tunnel-like runway with an exquisite red carpet for models to glide upon. All along the sides of the tunnel were yellow taxis, no doubt waiting to whisk away all the elite guests at the conclusion of the affair.

Boulevard Agency models happily participating in this exciting show were; Mr. and Miss Virtual World; Liam Netizen and Mimmi Boa, Kay Fairey, Nemi McCoy, Fann Hyun, Gemini Hennesey, Bunny Tomorrow, Jarl Soderstrom, Alexia Speizer, and Wenedrenia Soderstrom.

One of the special highlights of this show was the appearance of Alexia Speizer and Wenadrenia Soderstrom showing the children’s designs. The outfits were adorable, as were the “children”, who delighted the audience with their antics.

Nardcotix and Phoenix Rising Take Center Stage for BOSL Fashion Week 2009

The mid way point of any fashion week is notorious. It is the difficult stage, where journalists, organizers and even die-hard fashion addicts run the risk of fatigue. The eagerly anticipated opening shows are behind us, the glamorous finale still a few days away, so it takes an extra special label to entice the crowds and raise enthusiasm.

BOSL Fashion Week teasers - Phoenix Rising & Nardcotix

Combine the talents of two of SL’s most loved fashion houses–Nardcotix and Phoenix Rising–promise the assembled audience the exquisite delights of two new collections, both set in the glittering art deco surroundings of the of the magnificent Patch Thibaud Auditorium and even the most jaded fashion lover is rejuvenated.

Nardcotix-Phoenix Rising 1

Indeed, even 40 minutes prior to the show, admirers of Nardcotix and Phoenix Rising started to gather under the glittering chandeliers, eager to view the latest creations of evening wear and shoes presented by both of these distinguished fashion labels. The appreciative audience included, Willamina Fitzgerald, Nino Heartsdale and Salvo Waydelich who all delighted in the event which was presented by Giela Delpaso and expertly produced by Kay Fairey. Local chat rang out with good-humored greetings and there was a genuine sense of celebration in the air as the show began.

Nardcotix-Phoenix Rising 2

On the marble catwalk, models from the Boulevard Agency gracefully paraded some truly intoxicating gowns in a variety of hues. Burnt golds, rich purples, and deep claret reds highlighted with intricate floral detailing, swirling ruffles and peacock feather headdresses all drew rapturous applause. In contrast, other unashamedly feminine dresses in delicious creams, soft citrus, vibrant teal and sophisticated midnight black enchanted the crowd. All were undeniably modern classics, elegant and timeless in their appeal.
