Huge brands such as Blacklace, Tukinowaguma, Bax Coen, Creepy’s, Evil lu Designs and the hottest models was there! Let’s check some pictures taken by me :)

A Memorable Weekend: Project Tents ‘Haiti Benefit Expo’

In the USA, it is Memorial Day Weekend. Yet, this weekend we all, as a SL community, have an opportunity to remember the needs of the Haitian earthquake victims. Their struggle continues in the midst of hurricane season. The Project Tents Expo is an imaginative and significant exhibition of creativity and humanity. It ends on Sunday, May 30th.

One of the organizers, Sequioa Nightfire, greeted me, and explained how it began: “It was the idea of Miaa Rebane after seeing a broadcast on CNN.” It was rooted in her desire to not forget the Haitians in their plight. The complete story is published in the June issue of The Best of SL Magazine.

But if you want the short version – it is a display of compassion among fashion designers, builders and artists to call attention to the ongoing needs of Haitians. It is also a way to do something real for them: 75% of the proceeds will be donated to the internationally recognized charity organization ShelterBox, with the other monies helping to cover the costs of the designers, you might say. Each designer made a significant donation to participate in this event, and that meant they could exhibit their merchandise in a tent. The RL tents purchased with the proceeds will help to house displaced Haitians.

It is impressive to see the rows of mesh tents adorned with the best fashions of SL. The dramatic display of contrast between high fashion and daily survival will likely tug at every heart. “The sim,” says Sequoia, “was the work of many people bringing this together.” Mark Bonetto of DmD was the rainmaker, landscaper/terraformer and tent builder, “but it was the work of a lot of people to get us here.” The building is intentionally “rudimentary and simple,” she noted. In the corner, a huge art cube serves as an installation space. Inside, real life photos in various presentations illustrate the devastation of the country.

Sequoia Nightfire

Kay Fairey

Kay Fairey, one of the project co-founders, dealt mainly with overall strategy and PR, as well as designer communication especially among the Japanese designers. It was obvious that this project was precious to her, as we spoke, and she wanted to make sure that SL residents knew that this would be the last chance to contribute to the cause, merely by purchasing some extraordinary “exclusive” items. Kay sees SL as a wonderful community where “all the different nationalities unite to create projects” such as this one.

Sequoia Nightfire added, “We are very happy with the results, for they are reflective of the type of person Miaa is – elegant and generous.”   Miaa is Miss Virtual World 2010.

The sim is definitely one to be appreciated by all visitors, but support of the project is still direly needed given the overwhelming struggles facing Haitians.  Please offer your support and make this closing weekend especially memorable for the project participants and the people who will be helped through this event.

The expo opened May 21, with an official presentation. The event was organized by Projects Tents and Peace Train Charitable Trust for ShelterBox. For participating sponsors or other details, see http://sltents4haiti.wordpress.com/

Weekend In the Big Apple

New York, New York.

NYC New York

It is the city that never sleeps, especially when it comes to live music.   This weekend New York NYC, a new sim, was alive with music, kicking off with Strum Diesel.   The May Day block party also featured Stella Silvansky, Maximillion Kleene, AMForte Clarity, and FrankLee Anatra.

The NYC Shhh! nightclub was in full gear this weekend.  Sunday May 2nd was extra special.   Shhh! Owner/DJ Vixie Durant kicked in her second weekend with a Madonna themed night.   She wore a gold body suit complete with cones and fishnets.

DJ Vixie as Madonna

Soni with another tough assignment

You got to love Shhh!, located near the Statue of Liberty.  It epitomizes the perfect urban warehouse and Vixie is a wonderful conversationalist who knows her music history.   What was that she said about being 18 and listening to Madonna’s Erotica for the first time?   Lots of snickers when she compared the song to her introduction to soft porn.   Ah, those innocent days preMadonna!  Next week is Lady Gaga night at Shhh!    http://slurl.com/secondlife/New%20York%20NYC/229/122/24

Then I took a diversion!   Crosstown in Ephesus (on a different sim), it was DJ Miles Eleventhauer streaming live from RL Queens, New York at Nat’s Jazz Club, an established venue with a strong following.

DJ Miles

Miles played a mix of neo and acid jazz, sometimes with a turkish twist, and segued from experimental to traditional tunes with ease.  The lovely owner Linda Sautereau wore a luscious black gown, with a sexy low cut back.   She swirled across the dance floor, and chimed in to liven up the chat.

owner Linda Sauterea (second to the right)

ladydee Coba and Rufus Ranimodo

This club is a lovely addition to Second Life – sleek, charming and sophisticated, like the owner.  Miles kept the groove mellow and relevant, and knew just when to toss in a bit of Billy Holiday and a bit of funk and instrumental.   Is it too cliche to say we all got our groove on…LOL.    The weekly line-up is available at the front entrance.   http://slurl.com/secondlife/Ephesus/179/202/22

Wow then I popped back to the new New York NYC sim, and it was still hopping   This time, I took a cab to the Syl Darcy Gallery. It was a big night for Syl – her grand opening kicked off late Sunday afternoon with live music from AMForte and Lance Rembrandt, but the music continued.

Syl Darcy Gallery

The gallery is a live music venue filled with her wonderful RL art – rich in color and expressive of nature and landscapes.   I arrived back to the gallery in time to hear CarbonCrooner Constantine close out the night, singing live to a quiet but adoring audience.  He put on a fun show, checking in with the audience often to include their favorites.

CarbonCrooner

Syl Darcy

Syl is the CEO of C.Y.D. (Chase Your Dreams Records), and Carbon is represented by her label.  So it looks like Syl has a great mix of talent and art to offer up to NYC visitors. http://slurl.com/secondlife/New%20York%20NYC/89/167/22

It was great to spend the weekend in the Big Apple!   The rest of story in June’s Best of SL Magazine (society & events pages).

The Follow at Lion’s Gate

The Follow has an incredible “following” in Second Life.  From nearly their start in SL, they have performed in large arenas to accommodate their fans.   50 people came out to hear them on this particular Tuesday evening.  A great mix of original alternative music.   The three-person band is definitely superstar material.  No gimmicks.  They are incredible musicians.  The Follow has performed throughout the grid and across the USA.  A great downbeat, some solid guitar riffs, strong vocals, and intelligent lyrics are selling points that bring people back for more.  Troy Shoreland on guitar, AJ Darkwatch on bass, and Powers Avon on drums make a winning combination.     I am confident that Lion’s Gate could not have asked for a better turnout for their grand opening.    Their 2 hour concert was also streamed on livestream – http://thefollow.com

Jenna and crowd shot

Lion’s Gate Owners Jenna Dirval and Jun Waffle provided this statement, “We’ve worked diligently to provide a unique environment with a Grecco/ Roman feel – evoking the feeling of old meets new that you get when you visit the Mediterranean.   Our plan for Lion’s Gate is to be primarily a public sim with occasional events.  We welcome weddings and photographers and also are available for charitable events.”   Jenna has been the booking agent for The Follow since November, and this is the next step in their relationship.  Who better to know how much space they need for their fans than the person who has booked them during the last several months.  But Jenna reiterated to me that she really wants to use the venue for charitable activities.  It is an amazing venue so that is quite an offer.  http://slurl.com/secondlife/JourneysEnd/142/166/21

April 11th! Happy Birthday, Persia and Saturnine!

A wonderful and wacky themed party! A smashingly eccentric birthday bash for the nearly twinsy best friends, BOSL’s Persia Bravin and Saturnine (Sati) Dryke, kicked off the Sunday midday in Second Life at the Moolto region. Everybody came dressed for “Alice in Wonderland,” and there were crazy imitations of that theme.

Persia

In the middle of the event, everyone sang Happy Birthday to the birthday girls. It was probably best we all kept our voices off the grid, and let the recorded song sing ‘Happy Birthday’ to the duo. But plenty of birthday wishes came through chat text. The set was so authentic – checkered, reds, blacks – a fanciful mix within a playful wonderland. Yes, everyone enjoyed the crazy motif, befitting of the theme. Just about all of BOSL, staff, friends and supporters, showed up!  The photos tell the story!  Instead of presents, donations were accepted for Relay for Life via the many SL vendors.

The First Fae & Elven Pride Festival in the [Virtual] World!

This past weekend The First Fae & Elven Pride Festival brought all kinds together for a VIRTUAL FIRST in Second Life, maybe the real world too: Elves, Fae Creatures, Faeries, Furries, Merfolk, Neko, Tinies, Dark Elves, Drow, Dragons, and many more enjoyed a mix of live drama, dance and music. The diversity of the attendees added color and wonder to the festivities, which began Friday, April 2 and continues through April 12. This weekend there was a mix of live music from Tone Uriza, Joaquin Gustav, CelticMaidenWarrior Lancaster, AMforte Clarity, and Dutch vocalist aurora Metaluna – and this week promises more of the same from among the most talented of SL.

Other weekend performances included particle light dancer Cellandra Zon, who shared her Spring Revival show. Weekend DJs included Lysana McMillan, DJ Shay, and Astoria Luminos – all added mystic and charm to the celebrations. Writer & poet Wolfgang Glinka shared stories & poems, and ambient compositions were performed by others such as Torben Asp, Jana Kyomoon, and cypress Rosewood. Cypress amazed the audience with a surreal mix of alternately rushing and flowing ambience compositions, laced with guttural vocalizations that gave depth and homage to nature.

Special live performances and dj events are scheduled this week, and are subject to change (so please check the SL events calendar). All times listed are SLT.
4/7: Hexis Moody (1 pm), DJ Johnny Douhet (2 pm), and DJ Katana Tigerpaw (6 pm).
4/8: Shantu Selene (5 pm), Finnegan Faith (6 pm), and nuvolino Roffo (7 pm).
4/9: Damian Carbenell (5 pm) and Sojurn Rossini (6 pm).

Among the top performers planned for next Saturday are Maxmillion Kleene and Strummer Vultee. And be sure to check out one of the final events – a performance by The Choo Choo Chicks on Sunday April 11th. Drum dances will be ongoing daily, and two more performances of the Fae Circus are scheduled.

The festival organizer is Shay Sunnyside, and activities will be updated in the SL event listings throughout the week. More about the festival in the May issue of Best of Second Life Magazine’s Society Pages.

‘Relay For Life 2010’-Hope, love and a whole lot of fun

There can’t be many of us in second life who haven’t experienced the very real life specter of cancer.  Whether it’s been a personal battle, supporting a friend or co worker through intensive treatment or watching a loved one succumb to the disease, each of us has our own story to tell. Cancer is the great leveler -showing no regard for age, race or social background and last year, in the USA alone, there were 1,479,350 new cases diagnosed,  with cancer accounting for one in four deaths. Massive and humbling statistics. In an effort to fight cancer and to help financially and emotionally support the victims of this most cruel of diseases, ‘The American Cancer Society’ hold annual ‘Relay for Life’ events across the country and millions of people give their time and money to help raise funds.

Since starting in 1985, when surgeon Dr. Gordy Klatt decided to run continuously for twenty four hours to raise funds for cancer research, International ‘Relay For Life’ has been embraced by people across the globe, with events held in 20 countries outside of the United States and in Second Life, the community gathers together each year to help the cause too. In fact, ‘Relay For Life’ events have found strong supporter networks in SL, with hundreds of residents donating their time, talent, skills and experience to help fundraise. In 2008, ‘Relay For Life of Second Life’ raised $215,000 – surpassing its total for the previous three years combined, and now in its 6th year, it’s hoped that this figure will be exceeded with a goal target of $300,000. With 93 teams taking part in the actual relays this year, it looks set to be a record breaking year.

This year’s key theme is ‘Wishing On A Cure’ and to kick start the four month long fundraising season off in style, the glamorous surroundings of the Patch Thibaud Auditorium played host to a glittering opening ceremony. Addressing the large audience, RFL Event Chair, Tayzia Abattoir, welcomed us all with an impassioned   speech that had many in the crowd in tears. “Everyone has personal reasons why they Relay.” She told us. “Whether they have been directly touched by cancer, indirectly touched, or just know what a horrible disease it is and pray that people do not have to face it and want to help in any way they can. We are all one family here. We fight the same battle.”Following Tayzia, other members from the 60 strong in world RFL committee explained how all the proceeds from 2010’s RFL will be used to benefit the millions of people and their families affected by cancer each year. All speakers received rapturous applause from crowd, proving that the residents of SL are some of the most caring citizens on earth.

Cancer may be a very serious issue, but the RFL team and all its supporters in world are determined that hope, love and a whole lot of fun, are the biggest weapons in the war against cancer. Over the next few months, thousands of events and attractions will take place in SL to help highlight the cause and everyone at the opening ceremony was certainly in the mood to party! Following a standing ovation from the crowd for venue owner and BOSL CEO Frolic Mills, singer ScarlettLa Roux took to the stage, officially launching proceedings with a superb rendition of a Melissa Etheridge song called ‘I Run For Life’. The combination of heartfelt lyrics and ScarlettLa’s blues infused, sweet voice struck a chord with the audience.

After her thirty minute set, which was well received by the audience, next to take place under the spotlights was singer Damian Carbenell, while glamorous dancers from Dazzlers Inc accompanied him with a delightful routine. Then, to shouts and wild applause from the excited crowd, SL’s premier rock singer, Mankind Tracer, strode onto the stage bringing the audience to fever pitch with his usual mix of original songs, charisma and undeniable vocal talent. Mankind explained why, despite his busy schedule, he is so committed to lending his talents for this cause.

“The events that RFL put on are always fun, bringing in a lot of people who share a common cause.” He confirmed “And year after year, Relay For Life have shown themselves to be consistent in putting on benefits to raise much needed money. People know they can trust that the money raised will be handled properly by the good people running the events.”

The unity and camaraderie of everyone involved in the opening party was evident to see and donations flowed in from people reaching into their virtual wallets to donate to the cause. With a tribute to the work of RL fashion designer Alexander McQueen following the initial ceremony featuring unique couture made especially for this event, RFL  2010 has got off to the best possible start.

For Life in Second Life — Its Relay Your Way!

In its continued effort to raise awareness and support for the American Cancer Society, Relay For Life Second Life has taken a lead from it’s real life counterpart and is beginning a new series of focused fund raising events. We are therefore pleased to announce the inauguration of the For Life in Second Life program.

For Life events are intended to focus on specific interest areas and allow their followers to plan and hold an approved event to support the Relay For Life of Second Life. For Life events are not intended to be team related, but instead are festival events in support of Relay For Life of Second Life. With the diverse nature of the virtual communities in Second Life and the abilities of the platform, the scope of For Life in Second Life events is limitless.

For Life events such as Bark For Life have been held in Relay communities across the United States. Bark For Life celebrates, in a Relay format , the companionship, comfort and therapeutic benefit provided by pets. With the addition of For Life the American Cancer Society is able to reach a new or expanded audience for its programs and resources, and the fund raising that helps support them.

The first of these For Life events planned is Sail For Life. The event, chaired by Chad Swanson and Aislyn Keynes, will center around Second Life’s vibrant sailing community. Sail For Life will include Regattas, Sailing displays and lessons, auctions and social events. The Yacht Clubs and other communities around the Blake Sea area of the grid will all be welcomed to participate. The event is scheduled to take place in June. Other events are currently being planned, including the building and live music communities.

Trader Whiplash, who is well known for his many roles in Relay For Life of Second Life is the 2010 Chair of For Life. The former Mission and Corporate Chair and 2009 Spirit of Relay Award co-recipient is very excited about the new opportunities presented by For Life . “Second Life presents so many different areas with in which we can work to support the American Cancer Society and with this new format we are given a new avenue with which to approach and encourage participation. ” Trader, a leukemia survivor, states. “I look forward to working with the many groups who make up this amazing community. We hope that with the addition of For Life events the Relay For Life of Second Life will increase not only its all important fund raising results, but will bring more and more members of our community in contact with the efforts and programs of the Society and its continuing fight for a cure for cancer”.

Stingray Raymaker, the American Cancer Society Staff Partner for Relay for Life in Second Life agrees. “We are so very excited introduce this new fund raising opportunity to Second Life. We are fortunate to have a great volunteer, Trader Whiplash to spearhead this venture into new horizons, and this is a great step forward for both Relay For Life and Second Life. We hope that the For Life concept will help to open new doors for various communities and groups within Second Life to learn, participate and feel welcome to the world of Relay For Life. This demonstrates that there are ways for all types of different communities in Second Life to join the Relay Nation in the fight against cancer. “

The American Cancer Society and the Relay For Life of Second Life recognize the capacity of the For Life program to engage new participants and capitalize on the unique ability of Second Life to host these For Life events. For Life in Second Life welcomes any interest group in Second Life to explore the possibility of hosting their own event. Interested groups can contact Trader1 Whiplash in Second Life (trader@t1radio.com) for program requirements and standards, and additional information.

This year’s theme is Wishing On A Cure. Because Relay For Life represents the wish that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten, that those who face cancer will be supported, and that one day cancer will be eliminated. After 16 weeks of fun and fundraising, the teams will build campsites for the main event which will take place on July 17 and 18. Team members, volunteers and members of the SL community will walk a track for 24 hours to Celebrate survivorship, Remember those we have lost, and Fight Back to save lives by making a personal pledge to fight cancer.

In 2010 the fundraising goal is $300,000.

This year’s Event Chair is Tayzia Abattoir, supported by two Event Co-Chairs: Nuala Maracas and MamaP Beerbaum. The American Cancer Society’s representative in Second Life is Stingray9798 Raymaker.

About Relay For Life of Second Life

Relay For Life (RFL) is the signature fundraiser of the American Cancer Society. RFL of SL is an annual activity that takes place in Second Life in July each year. It is the largest, most successful fundraising event in the virtual world, raising more than $650,000 since it started in 2005. Volunteers form or join teams to have fun while fundraising and raising awareness about cancer from mid-March through mid-July. The funds raised go towards the American Cancer Society’s research, support and education programs, with 12-15% going towards international projects.

In 2009, RFL of SL raised $274,000 for the American Cancer Society and was ranked the 112th highest fundraiser out of more than 5,000 relays in the United States. There were 125 teams taking part. At the main event, 1913 avatars walked a track of 11,907 meters across 36 sims.

RFL has become an international movement. Since 1996 the American Cancer Society has partnered with international organizations to hold relay events all around the globe. In 2009 RFL took place in 21 countries. RFL of SL is international, too – participants from over 26 countries took part in RFL of SL in 2009.
