We’ve been CUBED!

Have you ever heard of the CUBE Community? Well…now you have! And you will know some more through this little blog post, because i went there just the other day…and it was worthy of a BOSL post!

CUBE Community - Editorial Clarity Pic

Me and Frolic were exploring some places, and out he rezzed an invitation to a party for the CUBE. The invitation was awesome, it looked amazing, so we were eager to go and take a look at the place. When we arrived, we were greeted by a modern, stylish, chic and elegant Sim. The colours were amazing, showcasing a pink and light blue theme. It grabbed my attention for sure.

Now, The CUBE is a gay community here in Second Life! However, in the modern world, i know Gay Clubs and places, don’t only attract the Gay Community. So this is definitely something for the sophisticated, and modern of people to go check out for sure!

CUBE Bar/Seating Area - Editorial Clarity pic

The Owner, Cherish Demonge, created a beautiful roof structure, which was overheard the bar/lounge area. Frolic and me immediately loved it, therefore, he asked Cherish if it could be used for the decor over at Boulevard Agency for the recent ‘Carnival Extravaganza’ show. So if anyone reading this was there, which i know some of you were…now you know where the inspiration was from! Also, Cherish was the creator of the AMAZING invitation that was passed out for that event also! So YAY Cherish!

Patch Thibaud Wins Top Honor in December Round of the UWA 3D Art & Design Challenge

Patch Thibaud won top honor for his ‘UWA Cultural Precinct Nexus’ build in the FLAGSHIP challenge of the University of Western Australia’s December Round of the UWA 3D Art & Design Challenge.

The FLAGSHIP Challenge is simple: To design the University of Australia (UWA) Cultural Precinct Flagship Building, a structure which ‘captures the essence of creative engagement’ that is also possible to construct in real life (RL). Monthly prizes will be awarded to winners up until the 31st of  August when the grand prize winner will be decided. Other specifications for the FLAGSHIP challenge entries include a 999 prim maximum for the structure itself and up to 200 prims allowance for artwork. The eventual grandprize entry will occupy a permanent place on the UWA sim. Monthly FLAGSHIP Challenge prizes include: L$5,000 (1st place) and L$1,250 (2nd place). The Grand Prize will be L$75,000 (1st place) and L$14,000 (2nd place). “The winning entry may be considered as a possible baseline design for one of the actual buildings that will be built at the RL location of the expanding Cultural Precinct of the University of Western Australia.”

Commenting after his win, Patch said, “The University of Western Australia is doing a wonderful thing, in their Flagship Challenge, for architecture in Second Life. The idea of encouraging creations in SL that could be used for a real world building is an innovative and exciting use of Second Life as a design tool, and further strenghthens the relationship of SL with real world applications. And I think the inclusiveness and openness of the process is an inspired and fertile platform for encourageing the arts in SL in general.”

The Flagship build can be seen here through the end of January 2010.

Congratulations, Patch!

Burning Life 09-‘Inferno of the Imagination’

It is high noon and overhead in an azure, cloudless sky the sun beats down scorching the ground underfoot. This is a desolate landscape-no trees or visible source of water, just a relentless plateau of barren, cracked earth as far as the eye can see. As a lizard scuttles across your path, the deep throb of rhythmic tribal drumming punctuates the deserts silence-beckoning you closer. Through the heat haze emerges a breath taking sight-an encampment of dreamers, flamboyant dancers, blue skinned men pounding the skins of a hundred drums, cyborgs and artists who paint the sky with flames. Welcome to the legend that is ‘Burning Man.’

Burning Life Fire Spinners

‘Burning Man’ is an annual Real Life celebration of art, culture and music which gathers together some of the most creative and innovative people on the planet. Held in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada, a temporary city is constructed using materials brought in by residents and at its heart stands a colossal wooden effigy of a man which is always burnt on the final night of the celebrations. This is a fleeting, transient festival where people are encouraged to be fully involved and to express themselves freely as part of a creative community. It has been the source of inspiration to many, including Second Life’s founder, Phillip Linden, who attended ‘Burning Man’ back in 1999 when he was still developing ‘Linden World’-the online community that would later evolve into Second Life. So it’s no surprise that each year, the ‘Burning Man’ festival is replicated here in SL too, where we know it as ‘Burning Life’. Like its Real Life counterpart, this virtual event also brings together artists, musicians and cyber space gypsies in a massive week long tribute to this spectacular festival.

Now in its 7th year, Burning Life continues to impress, with many artists working all year round to create unique artworks specifically for this event and at every turn, digital art works leave the viewer staring in wonderment. Bryn Oh, the celebrated Canadian artist, has created ‘Vessel’s Dream’ a fully immersive piece based on her own poem ‘Lilac’. Bryn tells me “There are some things in the real world which drive one to seek the solitude of the virtual world” This is a magical build requiring the visitor to use their camera controls to fully explore its complexity. Prefer your art with a Sci Fi twist? Then “Strange Repulsors” by Feathers Boa is a must see. A ‘reactive’ robot scrap yard, it appears that giant robots have invaded Earth causing mayhem and destruction. Feathers laughs as she tells me “The robots have invaded and there’s been a terrible accident. Everything’s fallen apart! But as you explore you’ll find everything leaping away from you. Seems you’re wearing an invisible anti-gravitation suit! Have fun!”

 Poid & EQ 2

Other jaw dropping installations from artists such as Poid Mahovlich, Ub Yifu, Misprint Thursday and Alizarin Goldflake mean you can easily spend a whole day simply exploring the world’s finest virtual artworks, but there are many other attractions to Burning Life too. Music is a central part of the Real Life festivities and this year, Mankind Tracer, SL’s premier rock musician kicked off the celebrations with a scorching set. Over the week, many other SL musicians, dancers and particle creators will all be contributing to this epic community event, so make sure you see Burning Life for yourself before it disappears into the flames for another year.

Special thanks to White Lebed and the whole ‘Burning Life Early Access’ crew’

Painter Meriman Did It Again …

painter_frontdoorPainter Meriman recently released his latest build – The Heritage. Basing the Heritage upon the American Colonial Georgian style (circa 1780-1840), this prodigious Second Life (SL) builder and real life (RL) architect manages to both reproduce the symmetrical, orderly lines and style of a true Georgian home, while retaining a feeling of comfort and warmth throughout the build. As usual Painter’s color palette is subtle and non-obtrusive yet complex incorporating the walls, carpets, and murals and allows for a variety of color options when selecting upholstered and painted furnishings for your own Heritage. Like Painter’s other period builds, the Heritage isn’t a museum to the 1790’s but instead feels like a real home – one that has been lived in, and improved upon, for generations.

Painter rezzed a copy of the Heritage at his store in Ocelot Valley where everyone is welcome to visit. You’ll often find Painter there chatting with friends or prospective clients or sometimes giving a tour of his latest build. I encourage you to stop byand check this house out.  Jaysun Dagger did a excellent job decorating the display house with furnishings that encompass many styles (Biedermeier, Louis XVI, Empire, Louis Philippe, 20th century, and of course Colonial). Jaysun’s interior design of the home gives it a sophistication and tasteful layered look that you will usually only find in the home of a true collector in RL (or someone who paid a decorator a couple hundred grand retainer). Jaysun also managed to avoid all the typical SL pitfalls of home decoration: nothing is over the top and the walls are not cluttered with bad art. Second Life decorators take note: this is how a home should look and feel.

At 1020 prims unfurnished, the Heritage is ideally suited for a large prim parcel or homestead sim. If you do not have the prim allowance for the Heritage then check out Painter’s smaller scale Montauk or Hampton homes. Both are New England style cottages that are perfect for a beach front parcel.

Description and specs for the Heritage are at the end of the post following the pictures.

THE HERITAGE – Description and Specs:

This colonial home by Painter Meriman has been decorated by Jaysun Dagger as an example of how the home might look in your corner of Second Life.

Given the number of prims, this home is ideally suited to a Homeland Sim or land with at least 2000 prims available.

SPECIFICATIONS:

1020 prims unfurnished
mod/copy/no transfer
Minimum footprint allocation – 50m x 50m

Beautifully detailed Colonial Home inspired by the Jefferson tradition. This substantial home is ideal for entertaining.

The great room, with its crystal chandelier, can serve as a lavish ballroom on occasion. The dining room features murals by Bierstadt – capturing the majesty of the American landscape. The panelled den cries out for books and artifacts to be placed on its shelves alongside a mahogany desk and a windsor chair.

Adjacent to the den and the great room there is a small gallery – a place for a couch where you can view a formal rose garden perhaps. Through the dining room there is space for a country style kitchen should u wish to have a kitchen. This area also includes the morning room with a conservatory to trap the sunlight for your indoor garden.

Upstairs two large bedrooms have their own dressing room and potential for a bathroom or private study which can be furnished by the owner in their own style – contemporary or traditional.

Additional wall textures have been provided if u wish to be creative. The richer colours can be applied to the bedroom walls to suit the mood u wish to create. Use these as a basis to create your own wall textures if u like.

The fires in each fireplace can be removed and replaced as needed, according to the season.

NOTE: When u first rezz the home note the coordinates of the rezz box so that should u need to re rezz at a future date u can place the box exactly in the same spot. Doing this you can leave all your furniture in position and the house will rezz appropriately.

Inclusions:

*Keyserver (ornate panel inside front door) controls supplied lighting, door security and window tints.

*Window Tints: 3 levels of tinting are provided on key windows to the bedroom areas primarily. Zones can be controlledby touching the window or all windows with tint function can be controlled by the keyserver. Doors and the conservatory do not have the tint function.

*Roofspace/Attic: There is ample room for a studio or playroom in the roof space if u wish to use it.

*Door Autoclose: If u wish to edit the doors to make them automatic closing you can do this by changing the doorsetup notecard in the contents folder of the door. Change the autoclose function to “on” and adjust the timing.
